I just returned from Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois for my first visit since 2019. Here’s a quick rundown of all the ongoing projects and changes we saw.
First, there’s a new structure under construction just outside the park’s entrance which I assume will be for a new entry plaza. The current entryway looks very old and outdated but this new one looks like it will be very well themed:
I was a bit disappointed when I saw Batman: The Ride would be closed on this holiday weekend for “improvements.”
The original B&M inverted coaster opened in 1992 with an all black paint job. It received its yellow and dark purple color scheme in 2004.
Twenty years later and Batman: The Ride is getting a fresh coat of yellow and dark purple paint. which it desperately needed.
Walking past Demon and out onto this midway will look very different at this time next year.
Six Flags Great America announced plans to open Wrath of Rakshasa, a Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) dive coaster standing 180 feet tall, with a record-breaking 96-degree drop and five inversions. No track is onsite that I saw and no footers had been poured yet that I could tell. It’s a bit further behind than another 2025 B&M coaster, Rapterra at Kings Dominion, which has almost all of its track installed. But keep in mind, all the track is manufactured at the same plant and they only have so much capacity.
Located on the site of the former Buccaneer Battle splash battle ride, the future site of the coaster is mostly a dirt lot at the moment.
The space almost looks bigger in pictures than it does in person. It will be quite impressive to see all the twisted track cramped into this area soon. I especially can’t wait to see the drop and tracks going over the midway.
Speaking of midways, if you’re visiting the park and want to get to the back quickly, please not that the pathway shown below is currently closed due to construction so you’ll have to go around through Southwest Territory.
I was happy to see the train was open as it was closed due to Maxx Force construction during my last visit.
I finally did get a ride on Maxx Force after utilizing the single Flash Pass option which cost $15. The compressed air launch that accelerates you from 0 to 78mph in 1.8 seconds is the most intense launch around. It’s short but oh so sweet.
And that does it for today’s tour. I hope you enjoyed this Six Flags Great America construction update with us!
