Georgia Surfer Construction Update at Six Flags Over Georgia

Six Flags Over Georgia’s new-for-2024 Georgia Surfer water coaster is still under construction. However, with six weeks of summer officially remaining, there’s still hope that the first-of-its-kind coaster will open in “summer 2024.”

Update: Six Flags Over Georgia announced on August 12, 2024, that Georgia Surfer will not open until 2025:

Georgia Surfer Construction Update at Six Flags Over Georgia

I was at the park over the weekend and was able to see Georgia Surfer construction up close. While the construction site wasn’t busy by any means, there were a few construction workers on site.

Announced nearly a year ago, Georgia Surfer is an Intamin “Ultra Surf” coaster model standing 144 feet tall with 590 feet of track. Its surfboard-themed train seats 20 riders on two rings of 10 seats.

The coaster occupies the former plot of land home to the Splashwater Falls shoot-the-chute water ride, which closed in 2018 and was finally removed in 2021.

Georgia Surfer is located in the “Steampunk” area of the park, not far from the “DC Super Friends” area. The coaster’s entrance is situated next to the Joker Funhouse Coaster and features the same path that led to Splashwater Falls.

The coaster will feature forward and backward launches with a top speed of 60 mph.

The camelback hill will no doubt provide a nice pop of airtime, especially at 60 mph.

Concrete is in place for the trough that the surfboard train will traverse through both forwards and backward. The queue can be seen forming on the right.

The coaster will use linear synchronous motors (LSM) to propel the coaster’s train forward and backward. The LSM fins have already been installed on the track.

The other section of fins can be seen in the trough area leading up to one of the spikes.

The spikes will no doubt provide some impressive airtime moments (three, according to the park’s news release).

Although I would have preferred an all-blue color scheme, the darker blue and bright orange supports contrast nicely.

While the track is complete, the train was nowhere to be seen — it’s entirely possible that it’s at the park but is being stored in a backstage location.

The Carousel Hill area provides some great views of the coaster.

As Six Flags Over Georiga is built on hilly terrain, Georgia Surfer is more or less built into the side of a hill.

That means that there are some pretty impressive retaining walls on the site.

Depending on where you’re viewing the coaster from, it appears that the coaster’s station is below ground level.

The brake fin at the top of each spike provides an extra layer of security should the train need to be slowed.

Pumps have been installed to maintain the proper water level in the trough. According to the park, Georgia Surfer will contain four water interaction effects, including a “water vortex tunnel creating a captivating water curtain, and a vertical wave wall and low-cutting splash combination creating a refreshing experience for both riders and spectators.”

However, the water effects can be turned down or off during colder months.

As of this posting, Six Flags Over Georgia has not yet announced an opening date. Judging from the current state of construction, we may have to wait a few more weeks.

Hopefully Georgia Surfer construction picks up speed so that we can take a spin on it soon.
