On July 31, Kings Dominion announced the park’s newest roller coaster, Rapterra, a launched wing coaster from Swiss coaster designers Bolliger & Mabillard. Located in the park’s “Jungle X-Pedition” area, Rapterra will become the third roller coaster in that area of the park, joining Tumbili and Reptilian.
With the coaster scheduled to open in Spring of 2025, construction is already well underway. During a visit to the park last weekend, we pulled out our camera and kept an “eye to the skies” to capture Rapterra rising.
Note: All photos were taken in guest areas without climbing or looking over construction fences. Don’t be that person. Just keep your eyes on the skies, and there’s plenty to see.
Themed signs noting the new coaster’s construction were located throughout the Jungle X area.
Walking into Jungle-X, we were greeted with the edge of this piece of banked track. The amount of people who walked into this area and thought that the coaster was open was a little concerning.
The “Wing Over” will be the first coaster element that riders experience following Rapterra’s launch.
There’s just something about new coaster track!
Volcano’s former queue building has been transformed into a “Research Center” by the Whey Foundation.
It’s amazing how much this coaster will change the Jungle X-Pedition footprint.
I predict this will be a popular photo location!

We imagine this rider on Reptilian was just as enamored with Rapterra’s construction as we were!

Several of the supports for Rapterra are still in “shipping crates.”
